Blood Clots Can Affect Anyone – Just Ask Gabe Ekemezie
When Gabe Ekemezie learned he had blood clots in his lungs, he was on a Megabus on his way out of town to celebrate a friend’s birthday. His doctor called to tell him he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.
So in the middle of the highway in Delaware, Gabe had the bus driver pull over and he called an ambulance to pick him up instead.
This story of a surprise diagnosis is all too common with blood clots. Gabe was fortunate his doctors were able to catch it early. The symptoms of PE can often be so mild that patients don’t seek medical attention until it is too late. In fact, 1 out of 4 patients with PE die with no warning.
And, as Gabe can tell you, a blood clot can form in anyone, even young, healthy, active individuals. While many factors can increase your risk of blood clots and PE, no one is immune to the possibility of this potentially fatal condition.
